Haitian American Psychiatric Association (HAPA) began with a small group of passionate clinicians who saw how stigma kept many in the Haitian community from getting the mental health support they needed.
Since our founding, we have focused on breaking barriers, sharing practical resources, and starting honest conversations about mental wellness here in New York and around the world. Our journey has taken us to health fairs, online webinars, community seminars, and a radio show every Sunday that dives into real mental health topics.
What makes us different is our strong focus on advocacy and education, not treatment. We connect individuals with trusted places to get help while making mental health information easier to understand. Our members are medical and mental health professionals who are just as dedicated to this cause as we are. Together, we’re proudly supporting the Haitian community no matter where home may be.
HAPA’s mission is to promote mental-health awareness, education, and culturally informed psychiatric care within the Haitian community. We strive to reduce stigma, strengthen mental-health literacy, and advocate for accessible and compassionate treatment for all Haitians.
We envision a future where mental health is understood, openly discussed, and supported across Haitian communities, and where every Haitian has access to high-quality, culturally competent psychiatric services.
HAPA’s efforts include community workshops, professional conferences, cultural events, radio broadcasts, and training opportunities for clinicians treating Haitian populations. We work with partners in both the U.S. and Haiti, promoting mental-health education, cultural understanding, and community resilience.
Founded in 1984 by Haitian American mental-health professionals committed to serving their community, HAPA began as a grassroots effort to fill a gap in culturally relevant mental-health education and care. Over the years, it has grown into a national organization with strong community ties, expanding its reach through public programming, educational events, and collaborative partnerships.
Meet the Minds Driving Mental Health Progress. HAPA is guided by an executive board and committee chairs responsible for education, outreach, membership, public relations, and advocacy. Our leadership includes psychiatrists and mental-health professionals who bring experience, dedication, and a deep commitment to serving Haitian communities.
